Where to buy Australian bacon
If you’re looking to buy Australian bacon, it might be harder than you think to find products in your local supermarket.
We often come across questions like this one, posted in an online forum:
Does anyone know where I can buy Australian bacon? I’m sick of buying products made with imported pork.
I went to all the major supermarkets in my area and couldn’t find a single pack that’s made with Australian pork. When I checked the packs, some had just 10-20% of ingredients from Australia – what a joke!
Why is it hard to find Australian bacon?
It might surprise you to learn the majority of ham and bacon sold in Australia is made from imported pork. Estimates suggest as much as 70% of the bacon in our supermarkets uses imported pork.
Countries including the United States and Denmark are major pork exporters to Australia. Supported by government subsidies from their home markets, exporters can bring their frozen pork into Australian at a lower cost than our local farmers.
What if the packaging says made in Australia?
To complicate matters, imported pork is often processed and cooked in Australia. This means that your bacon may be labelled as ‘made in Australia’ but will not be made from Australian pork.
Another nuance is the origin of ingredients. Bacon includes additives like Sodium Nitrate (required by health regulations) and Salt, which may not be available from Australian suppliers. This is why some bacon made with Australian pork can be labelled as 95% or 99% Australian.
As a general rule – choose products with an almost full bar. Bacon which is less than 90% Australian is likely made with imported pork.
Which brands make Australian bacon?
You won’t find Australian Pork in cheap, mass-market bacon. If you want true-blue bacon, you need to look for smaller, higher quality brands. Kaczanowski & Co is obviously a great starting point.
Kaczanowski & Co ham and bacon is made with certified Australian pork.
We take enormous pride in this fact, and that’s why you’ll see the Australian Pork certification logo all our packaging.
Does Australian bacon taste good?
Not to brag, but our 100% Australian bacon is multi-award winning. Over the last 10 years we’ve brought home top honours at industry competitions including the Sydney Royal Fine Food awards.
Part of the reason we win awards is that we make Kaczanowski bacon with time-honoured recipes, premium Australian ingredients, and extraordinary care.
The hallmark of our products is premium quality. That’s why we’re proud to support Aussie farmers and use only locally grown pork in our ham and bacon.
Where to buy Australian bacon?
The best place to find a good Aussie rasher is by going to your local butcher, deli, or independent grocer. Avoid the big supermarkets.
Buying from a local butcher or deli means you can have bacon sliced fresh, and can ask for Kaczanowski (or your favourite Aussie brand) by name.
Sometimes it can be difficult to buy from small food producers.
Luckily, Kaczanowski supplies hundreds of stockists and a network of wholesale distributors across the country. So, chances are, delicious Australian bacon is just around the corner.
